As Emmy season heats up, Awards Focus brought together three standout cinematographers for a dynamic conversation about building visual language across drama, action, and science fiction.
Moderated by Matt Koss, the panel features Johanna Coelho (“The Pitt”), Hillary Spera (“Daredevil: Born Again”), and Chris Teague (“The Acolyte”), each offering a behind-the-scenes look at how they crafted the distinct visual worlds of their Emmy-submitted episodes.
Coelho explored the challenges of shooting in a clinical, confined hospital setting for “The Pitt”, and how she relied on subtle movement, lighting, and stillness to reflect emotional intensity. “There’s not a lot of spectacle in the environment,” she shared, “so the drama has to live in how we shoot the faces, the silences, and the stillness.”
Spera explained her approach to “Daredevil: Born Again,” which treated New York as an active character. “We shot it very practically,” she explained. We wanted the audience to feel the grit and history of the space.” Her work with character framing also reinforced deeper power dynamics between characters like Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk.
Teague revealed how “The Acolyte” drew inspiration from martial arts films and classic fantasy, blending practical sets with 3D modeling to choreograph intense action scenes. He detailed the creation of the Kohfar Forest — a massive and immersive set that required coordination across departments — and how he worked to preserve emotional clarity within the show’s high-concept visuals.
The panelists also touched on the role of collaboration, the cinematographer as a “visual psychologist,” and the advice they’d give to emerging filmmakers trying to break into the craft.
