Against the backdrop of Los Angeles’s recovery from the ongoing and devastating wildfires, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed the highly anticipated nominations for the 97th Oscars® today. Actor-writer-comedians Rachel Sennott and Bowen Yang announced the nominees during a live global broadcast from the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater. The nominations were streamed across platforms, including Oscar.com, Oscars.org, Disney+, and Hulu.
Leading the pack, “Emilia Pérez” earned an impressive 13 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director for Jacques Audiard, and Best Actress for Karla Sofía Gascón. Gascón’s nomination marks a historic milestone as the first transgender woman to be recognized in the Best Actress category. Other major contenders included “The Brutalist” and “Wicked,” each securing 10 nominations across various categories.
This year’s nominations showcased a blend of predictable favorites and noteworthy surprises. Recent Golden Globe winners Adrien Brody (“The Brutalist”), Demi Moore (“The Substance”), Zoe Saldaña (“Emilia Pérez”), and Kieran Culkin (“A Real Pain”) secured expected recognition. Meanwhile, Sebastian Stan (“The Apprentice”), Monica Barbaro (“A Complete Unknown”), and Fernanda Torres (“I’m Still Here”) continued their awards season momentum with nominations after Golden Globe wins and SAG award recognition.
Diane Warren extends her awards streak with her 16th Oscar nomination for Best Original Song for “The Journey” from the film “The Six Triple Eight”, adding to her storied career and legacy. Costume Designer Arianne Phillips earned a nomination her fourth nomination for “A Complete Unknown,” while cinematographer Bradford Young earned recognition for his innovative first-person point-of-view style with “Nickel Boys.” On the technical front, the VFX teams behind Denis Villenuve’s “Dune: Part Two” and Robbie William’s musical biopic “Better Man” scored nominations for pushing the boundaries of cinematic innovation.
Several notable names missed out on nominations this year, including Nicole Kidman (“Babygirl”), Danielle Deadwyler (“The Piano Lesson”), Daniel Craig (“Queer”), and Pamela Anderson (“The Last Showgirl”). In the documentary categories, “Will & Harper,” which had garnered early acclaim, was a surprising absence. Additionally, directors Edward Berger (“Conclave”), Jon M. Chu (“Wicked”), Denis Villeneuve (“Dune: Part Two”), and RaMell Ross (“Nickel Boys”) were left out of the Best Director category despite their films receiving widespread praise.
Sennott and Yang unveiled the nominees in two rounds, starting at 5:30 a.m. PT and concluding shortly after. Academy members from 19 branches determined the nominees within their respective categories, while all members participated in selecting Best Picture.
The 97th Oscars® will take place on Sunday, March 2, 2025, at the Dolby® Theatre at Ovation Hollywood. The event will be broadcast live on ABC at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT and streamed on Hulu, reaching audiences in over 200 territories worldwide.
