After the backlash from last year’s scandal that tarnished Hollywood’s once glitzy affair, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association handed out its Golden Globes at a scaled-down presentation that didn’t include a televised show, a red carpet, and celebrities.

The annual affair took place earlier this evening at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, where winners in both film and TV categories were announced. On the TV side, HBO’s “Succession” won Best Drama, along with nods for Jeremy Strong and Sarah Snook. “Pose” star Michaela Jaé Rodriguez became the first trans woman to take home a Globe, taking best lead actress in a drama series.

On the film side, Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story” shined in many of the categories, winning trophies for Best Picture (Musical or Comedy), Best Supporting Actress (Ariana DeBose), and Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical (Rachel Zegler). Jane Campion’s “The Power of the Dog” also won in multiple categories, winning Best Picture (Drama), Best Supporting Actor (Kodi Smit-McPhee), and Campion for Best Director.

A Long Winter for the HFPA

The show ran into controversy last year, after the Los Angeles Times did an investigation on the HFPA, which was soon engulfed by controversy over issues ranging from preferential treatment and favors sought by its members to lack of diverse representation in its ranks, which included no Black members. NBC ultimately pulled out of broadcasting the 2022 Golden Globes due to the controversy.

After the fallout, the HFPA announced measures to address the concerns, such as collaborating with the NAACP on the Reimagine Coalition, a five-year partnership that aims to increase diverse representation throughout the industry, and also including diverse members to its voting ranks. However, it remains to be seen if the changes will be enough for the show to recover from the setbacks and reinvent its public image.
