Easterseals Disability Services and Film Independent have announced the nominees for the inaugural Easterseals Disability Arts & Culture Awards, also known as The DARCYS, with comedian Tina Friml set to host the Oct. 10 ceremony at The Historic Barker Hangar in Santa Monica.
Formerly known as the Media Access Awards, The DARCYS recognize achievement in authentic disability representation across film, television and social media, honoring filmmakers, performers and creators working to advance disability inclusion throughout entertainment. The newly reimagined awards build on the more than four-decade history of the Media Access Awards while introducing a competitive nominations process across nine categories.
Actor, comedian, activist and author Geri Jewell will also receive the inaugural DARCYS Legacy Award in recognition of her groundbreaking contributions to disability representation in entertainment.

The ceremony will be co-produced by Film Independent Spirit Awards Executive Producers Shawn Davis and Andrew Schaff in collaboration with Live Digital Entertainment Executive Producer Eddie Delbridge.
Tina Friml to Host
Friml brings a comedic career built in part around challenging perceptions of disability through humor and personal storytelling. Born with cerebral palsy, the stand-up comedian made her late-night television debut on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” and has appeared on Comedy Central’s “Stand-Up Featuring” and “Don’t Tell Comedy.” She was also named a New Face at the Just for Laughs Festival in 2019.
“Authentic representation of disability, or of any underspoken identity, needs three things: Confrontational honesty, unapologetic confidence and the revealing moments which happen outside of the average sight line,” said Friml. “I’m honored to be a part of casting a light on the new generation of visionaries who will raise the level of disability storytelling closer to where it deserves to be.”

Geri Jewell to Receive Inaugural Legacy Award
Jewell will receive the first DARCYS Legacy Award, which recognizes individuals with disabilities whose advocacy and work have helped transform entertainment, arts and culture while advancing meaningful disability representation.
Jewell began her career as a stand-up comedian at The Comedy Store in 1978 before Norman Lear cast her as Cousin Geri on the NBC sitcom “The Facts of Life.” The role made Jewell the first person with a disability to hold a regular role on a primetime television series.
She later appeared in projects including “Deadwood,” “Sesame Street,” “21 Jump Street,” “The Young and the Restless,” “Strong Medicine” and “Alcatraz.” Jewell is also the author of “I’m Walking as Straight as I Can,” which received a 2012 Gold Award from Independent Publishers. In 2026, she released “Geri’s Jewels & Gems,” a collection of her columns for Ability Magazine.
Representation Behind the Awards
The DARCYS’ eligibility requirements are designed to ensure that disability inclusion is substantive, sustained and integral to the work being recognized. Nominees and winners are determined by industry committees consisting of filmmakers, critics, past Media Access Awards honorees and representatives from industry guilds and nonprofit organizations. A majority of committee members are individuals with disabilities.
Easterseals also assembled a Disability Advisory Committee led by co-chairs Emily Ladau and Nicole Lynn Evans. Members include Jamie Brewer, Christine Bruno, Lawrence Carter-Long, Ashley Eakin, Danny J. Gomez, CJ Jones, Danny Kurtzman, Jim LeBrecht, Lachi, Sue Ann Pien and Lolo Spencer.
According to statistics released with the nominations, 55 percent of the overall 2026 nominees are women or gender nonconforming and 17 percent are BIPOC. Among nominated writers, directors, producers and executive producers, 54 percent are women and 14 percent are BIPOC. Among nominated performers, 54 percent are women, 23 percent are BIPOC and all identify as people with disabilities.
Netflix leads distributors with four film and television nominations, including recognition for “Color Book,” “Love on the Spectrum” and “Pulse.” HBO Max’s “The Pitt” received two nominations, while Peacock’s “All Her Fault” also received two. “Pulse” earned two nominations overall, for Best Scripted Series and Jessy Yates’ performance.
The inaugural Easterseals Disability Arts & Culture Awards will take place Saturday, Oct. 10 at The Historic Barker Hangar in Santa Monica. The ceremony will be broadcast on PBS SoCal at a date to be announced, with rebroadcasts on PBS stations nationwide.
