Getting older can be a real challenge. Friends change, family dynamics twist, and suddenly, that distance we feel isn’t just physical—it’s emotional. If there’s a film genre that captures this bittersweet reality with finesse, it’s the road trip movie.
This year’s Sundance hit, A Real Pain, follows two polar-opposite cousins on a European tour to explore their grandmother’s roots, revealing just how much their once-close relationship has frayed. Starring Jesse Eisenberg and Kieran Culkin, the film dives deep into the complexities of connection amid emotional distance. In grappling with grief, Culkin’s Benji contrasts sharply with Eisenberg’s driven David, juggling family life in NYC. Their chemistry crackles, and Eisenberg’s direction shines as he weaves together the travelers’ stories, bringing to life the often chaotic dynamics of group tours, where strangers can unexpectedly become significant companions on your journey. It’s a film that captures the essence of connection and the bittersweet pain of unspoken words, reminding us that the real hurt lies not in distance but in our reluctance to reach out.
In my video, I complain about David’s outfit and explain why this is one of my favorite films of the year.
