Get ready for a wild ride with ‘Novocaine’, an action-packed thriller from directors Dan Berk and Robert Olson.
Jack Quaid stars as Nathan Caine, a socially awkward man with a genetic disorder that makes him numb to pain. Nate leads a careful life— padding his apartment with tennis balls and working as an assistant bank manager in San Diego. But his predictable world is turned upside down when Sherry (Amber Midthunder), a co-worker, asks him out. Their connection grows quickly, but things take a dark turn when a group of Santa-costumed robbers burst into the bank, taking Sherry hostage and forcing Nate to embark on a dangerous mission to rescue her.
At its heart, ‘Novocaine’ is about Nate’s belief that Sherry could be the love of his life. The chemistry between Quaid and Midthunder makes their bond feel raw and real, and the film effectively uses a pivotal moment—a heart-wrenching story from an elderly client about losing his wife—to spark Nate’s sudden transformation. From a sheltered, pain-free man, Nate becomes a reluctant hero, finding new strength within himself and a determination to save the woman he barely knows, even if it costs him everything.
This is body horror at its finest, with Berk and Olson clearly having fun with the grotesque, using Nate’s lack of pain as a driving force in the story. The film’s sound design amplifies every gruesome moment, turning fight sequences into a symphony of squishy, crunchy noises that make each injury feel painfully real.
Jack Quaid is hilarious in his role, conveying Nate’s hesitation, terror, and surprising determination through his facial expressions alone. Whether he’s fighting in a tattoo parlor or getting impaled by an arrow, Quaid keeps you rooting for him despite the brutal toll on his body. Amber Midthunder is perfectly cast as Sherry, with both strength and vulnerability, while Jacob Batalon and Ray Nicholson provide solid supporting performances.
And the kicker? ‘Novocaine’ is a Christmas movie! The movie takes place during the holiday season, though it’s set in sunny San Diego rather than a snowy landscape. With its high-stakes action, hand-to-hand combat, car chases, and a finale that will test your gag reflex, it’s a holiday film for those who prefer more blood with their cheers.
Open in theaters March, 14th 2025.
